Abstract:

The ability to move and to stabilize the hand is critical for many activities of daily living such as bringing a spoonful of soup to the mouth without spilling. In this talk I will describe recent experimental evidence from our lab suggesting first that the brain implements separate control over limb posture and movement during horizontal planar reaching tasks, and second, that these two control functions may be differentially impaired after stroke. Such observations raise questions as to how the brain normally integrates the control of limb posture and movement. I will close by describing a novel experimental approach our group is developing to understand how the brain resolves redundancy in the control of posture and movement.
