Volunteer Requirements:
Motivation to learn about psychiatry. Although people who volunteer usually have a strong interest in psychiatry, not all do. Last year one volunteer was interested in pediatrics and family practice and another was planning to go into internal medicine. Both appreciated what they learned in psychiatry and felt it was a tremendous benefit. It didn’t change their interest but it gave them a greater understanding of the psychiatric issues they would see in medicine and how to deal with patients in general.
Hours per week: The expectation is a contribution of 6 hours per week depending on availability.
Length of time commitment: We would like a time commitment of one year. Most students also feel that a year is sufficient to give them what they want to get from this clinical experience. We have, of course, had people for shorter and longer time periods.
Volunteer experience: Each volunteer is matched with a Child Psychiatry fellow mentor ( PGY 4, 5, or 6) and in addition is usually matched with one of our division's specialty clinics which is run by attending psychiatrists. Volunteers divide their time between
clinic time: one morning or afternoon per week in the clinic
non-clinic time: additional hours directly assisting the fellow they are assigned to
