1. Escapism in America Series: Superhero Movies
Date: Wednesday, March 31, 2010
Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Location: Doheny Library Lecture Hall (2nd Floor)
Escapism in America series | Superhero Movies - More than ever before, Americans can escape into a world separate from the reality in which they exist. From superhero movies to virtual reality to role-playing games to vampires, what is it that makes people drawn to a world of fantasy beyond our immediate reality? How does today's environment encourage escapism?
Batman, Spiderman, and Iron Man have been rescuing damsels in distress and saving cities from the brink of destruction for some time now, but these superheroes have been brought back to life in all their glory in Hollywood recently. Whether it's their superpowers or the moral dilemmas they face, people have become fixated with these comic book heroes. What effect do superhero movies have on motivating people in times of despair? In a time of recession and war, have superheroes provided an escape into a fantastical world where good always predictably prevails over evil?
And as always, free food will be provided! Invite your friends, too!

2. ACA Presents - An Evening with Mythbuster Grant Imahara!
Date: Tuesday, April 6, 2010
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: Bovard Auditorium
Many of life's lessons just can't be learned at school. Where then could you learn that you can't use your pants as a zipline and slide down the cable to escape a ski lift? Or that your innards will replace your brain if you lose your air supply during deep-sea diving? Or that C4 can explode anything and everything? Textbooks don't teach us all this, but Mythbusters does!
Join us in welcoming back USC alum and Mythbuster Grant Imahara! Grant, who majored in electrical engineering here at USC, is a member of the Build Team on Mythbusters, the wildly popular show on the Discovery channel that puts viewer-submitted myths, viral videos, and movie scenes to the test of science. He will be sharing his experience as a Mythbuster, showing us behind-the-scenes sneak peeks of the show, and answering your questions!
So for all you science geeks, special effects fans, and crusaders seeking the truth about the world, IT'S CONFIRMED - Mythbusters is coming to campus!
Free admission! Bring your friends, too!
