The Somos Hermanos Student Immersion Program
The USC Somos Hermanos Student Immersion Program (SIP) has extended its deadline and is currently accepting applications for its July through December 2010 and January through June 2011 programs.
The Somos Hermanos SIP targets students who have completed their undergraduate education and are taking a year off before continuing on to graduate school in the health professions. We accept students who will be attending graduate school for medicine, dentistry, nursing, psychology, physical therapy, and other health-related fields. We understand that many students are in the process of applying to health care graduate school during their year off, and for that reason, we enable students to fly back to the US for interviews during the program if necessary. We also allow enough unscheduled time for students to work on their applications. About half of our participants apply to medical school while participating in this program.
The Somos Hermanos SIP aims to reduce the health care disparity experienced by Latinos by increasing the number of bilingual, culturally competent health care providers in the U.S. To achieve this, groups of students live in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala for 6 months where their time will be split between intensive, one-on-one language instruction and participating in volunteer projects. Throughout the program students live with a Guatemalan family, attend lectures, and participate in culturally relevant field trips, activities, and volunteer projectsall of which contribute to a greater understanding of Latin American cultures. The program also includes a 10-day trip to El Salvador and a one-week trip to Oaxaca, Mexico.

Application deadline is midnight, Monday March 15th, 2010. Please not that this deadline has been extended three weeks. Applications will not be processed on a rolling basis, all applications will be processed after March 15th provided that the references and application have been submitted.
