The Ethnicity of Breast Cancer

Tomorrow Thurs April 14th the gentlemen of Sigma Delta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be hosting a panel on the cultural discrepancies in the diagnosis and treatment of Breast Cancer.
A panel consisting of Master Candidates from the Department of Global Medicine from the USC Keck School of Medicine will be discussing their joint research for the need to account for cultural factors in the breast healthcare of women and how such factors significantly affect the experiences of women of differing ethnic groups with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Here are a few of the topics that will be discussed
-African American and Latina women are more likely than Caucasian women to be under diagnosed at an early age and to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage.
-Latina and Caucasian women are more likely than African American women to choose more aggressive forms of treatment.
-There are discrepancies in diagnosis that may be the result of cultural factors in access to healthcare, quality of healthcare, or adequacy and availability of information on breast cancer.
-There are disparities in physician-patient relationships and the role of how family can affect medical decisions in the form of a patient’s choice for treatment.
This event is going to take place Thurs April 14th at THH 101 at 8pm.
