Phi Sigma Last Meeting: Dr. Ite Laird-Offringa Talks Genome Censorship

Hello!

First off, a big thanks everyone who came out last week to listen to Dr. Quick! It was a very interesting talk! To those who couldn't make it, we hope you can come to our LAST meeting!
Our last speaker for this year will be Dr. Ite Laird-Offringa, an Associate Professor from the Keck School of Medicine ().
Dr. Laird will be presenting on her research with a talk entitled: "Genome Censorship: Epigenetic Control of Cell Fate" this Thursday (4/21), at 8:00 p.m. at GFS 109, and will also be speaking about other research happening at the Health Sciences Campus, so you won't want to miss out! Please try to make it out that night! We will be having free milk and cookies, too!

Also, we'd like to remind everyone that applications for next year's e-board are due next Monday, 4/25, at 5pm. You may bring a copy of your application and CV to us at this Thursday's meeting, or send the files to us at uscphisigma@gmail.com. Phi Sigma Meeting: Dr. Michael Quick, Cookies & Milk

Hello everyone!
Hope you have all had a great start to our third-to-last week of school! We are excited to announce that Dr. Michael Quick will be speaking for us this week! Here are the details of the meeting:
When: Thursday, April 14, at 8 p.m.
Where: GFS 109
What: "From self-stimulating rats to knock-out mice: what they tell us about drugs, drug abuse, and addiction"

Dr. Quick is the Executive Vice-Provost and a Professor of Biological Sciences, and as many of you probably know, an incredibly fun and interesting speaker! Phi Sigma Event—Not-So-Sweet Talk to the Brain: Portal Vein Glucose Sensing in Hypoglycemia

First off, a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the IMAX event on Saturday! It was awesome seeing you, and I think we can all agree that the IMAX cinematography was incredible! Hope that we can take more people with us next time around!
Second, we are very excited to announce another milk and cookies session, this time with guest speaker Dr. Casey Donovan, who is the Chair of USC's Kinesiology Department! Here are the details of our meeting with Dr. Donovan this week:

Phi Sigma IMAX Movie & Dinner, Research Assistant Opportunity

Hello Phi Sigma-ers!

Welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing spring break. If you're still in the mood for some fun, though, Phi Sigma invites you to attend a free IMAX movie and dinner this Saturday (3/26)! We will be meeting at 5pm to head over together to the California Science Center and watch "Hubble" 3-D. The movie will last from 5:30 p.m. to approximately 6:15 p.m., and will be followed by a free Subway dinner. Space is limited, so if you are interested in attending, please RSVP to this e-mail by Friday, Mar. 25, at 5:00 p.m.

Also, we are excited to announce an awesome research opportunity!

Dr. Ite Laird of the USC Health Sciences Campus (HSC) researches lung cancer and is currently seeking a junior undergraduate researcher for her lab. She has emphasized that students will be considered on a first-come, first-evaluated basis, so please fill out the attached application and turn it in ASAP! Phi Sigma: Cookies, Milk, and a Presentation by Dr. Arnold

Hello Trojans!

Phi Sigma invites you to come hear USC's very own Dr. Donald Arnold present on "Visualizing synaptic structure in vivo." Dr. Arnold is an associate professor in the molecular biology department and received his Ph.D from Johns Hopkins University, so this is an excellent opportunity to not only network with fellow members of this prestigious Biological Sciences Honor Society, but also to learn more about Dr. Arnold's research and about research in general. Phi Sigma Election Social

Happy Week 3, everyone! Hope you all have settled in to classes without too much trouble, because we are excited to announce our first event of the semester: a ROOT BEER FLOAT / election social! Come join us THIS THURSDAY, 1/27, at 8pm in ZHS 163 to make your own delicious root beer floats, meet and greet your fellow bio enthusiasts, and cast in your vote for Phi Sigma's new Publicity Chair this semester! If you are interested in applying for this position, please complete and e-mail the e-board application (found on our blog at uscphisigma.weebly.com under the Memberships tab) to uscphisigma@gmail.com by 1/27 at 12pm, and prepare a short 1-2 min speech for the social.

Also, we are now collecting both Associate and Full membership applications for the spring semester! These documents can also be found at our blog. Please submit the appropriate application and membership fee ($30 for Associate members, difference between $50 and Associate fee, if applicable, for Full members) to us by our first speaker meeting, which will take place in the middle of February (exact date and time to be e-mailed soon).

Discovery and Global Scholars

This USC Discovery Scholars Program recognizes graduating seniors who excel in the classroom and display the ability to create exceptional new scholarship and artistic works. The Global Scholars Program recognizes graduating seniors who excel in their studies at home and abroad.

Students are able to compete for the recognition at graduation and may be considered for a $10,000 prize towards graduate study.

There will be an information session with Dean Lamy on Friday, January 28, 2pm in THH 212.

Phi Sigma Membership Applications

Hello Phi Sigma-ers!

First, thanks to all who attended our social on Wednesday night!  We presented the USC Phi Sigma honor society, the current E-board, membership, contact info/resources, as well as opportunities for research involvement on campus.  We certainly encourage you all to get involved!

Associate Membership

• For 2nd-semester freshmen, sophomores & transfer students in their freshman or sophomore year
• Cost - $30 (cash or check made payable to "USC Phi Sigma")

Full Membership

• For juniors, seniors, & transfer students in their junior or senior year
• Cost - $20 (or $50 if not previously an Associate Member)

For both membership applications, the Science GPA includes all math, chemistry, physics, and biology courses. The membership applications are due on Thursday, October 14.  Please contact uscphisigma@gmail.com for the applications.

Welcome to a new semester in Phi Sigma!

Hope that everyone has had a brilliant start to the school year! Here is some information about plans for Phi Sigma at USC this fall.

First, we want to welcome you to our all-new blog at uscphisigma.weebly.com! Here you can find pictures, announcements about events, and summaries of meetings posted throughout the school year.

Second, the E-board is starting to plan the first Phi Sigma general meeting & social, but we also want to hear YOUR input! Please take 5 minutes to fill out this survey with your time availabilities, as well as comment on what professors/professionals/fields of interest you would like to hear from! We will do our best to meet your requests.

Third, we will be sending out Associate and Full membership information soon. We hope you will become involved and join us in Phi Sigma this semester, and we look forward to having you on board!
