PREP at the University of New Mexico

The Post-baccalaureate Research and Education Program (PREP) at the University of New Mexico is currently recruiting nationwide and accepting applications for the 2010-2011 cohort. PREP is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded program designed to enhance the ability of under-represented minority post-baccalaureate students in the biomedical sciences/engineering to gain entry to, and succeed in, nationally-recognized Ph.D. programs.

We anticipate to begin the 2010-2011 program in June 2010. We are seeking recent (or May 2010) college graduates in the following fields (Biochemistry, Biology, Chemical & Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Psychology, and related fields) to fill 9 PREP trainee/scholar openings. The scholars are required to perform research for one full year with their faculty mentor.  In addition to lab research, scholars are expected to

  • prepare and take the GRE
  • seek and apply to Biomedical graduate programs
  • attend professional meetings
  • enroll in a Research Ethics course
  • present research
  • attend weekly meetings
  • attend seminars
  • and other recommended activities.

The program is an intensive one-year paid program.  Although it is time consuming, PREP provides scholars with a great number of tools, skills, and knowledge to succeed in graduate school.

If you are a recent or May 2010 college graduate, please visit the PREP website at http://biology.unm.edu/prep for additional information and for instructions on how to apply.  There is no official deadline, however we highly encourage applicants to submit their application by March 12, 2010.  For additional questions, please contact the Program Coordinator, Patty Banuelos at prep@unm.edu  or at 505-610-1725.

University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine DVM-PhD program

Did you know that these spontaneous cancers in dogs and cats share many
features with human cancers? Chemotherapy, radiation therapy,
hypothermia and immunotherapy are all used to fight cancer in the pet
animal, and many naturally occurring cancers in pets closely resemble
human cancer and provide meaningful systems for cancer research.
Veterinarian scientists are uniquely qualified to be comparative
oncologists - researchers who study naturally-occurring cancers in
animals as models for human disease.

The University of Pennsylvania
School of Veterinary Medicine provides an outstanding environment for
the training of future veterinary scientists through our combined
VMD-PhD (DVM-PhD) program. It's an excellent way for you to continue
your education while impacting the future of medicine for humans and
all species.
