USC's Student
Coalition for Asian Pacific-American Empowerment (SCAPE) is holding a general meeting tomorrow, October 20th, at 700PM in VKC 156! Come join us for free food (Spam Musubi and Kimchi Rice + snacks + drinks) and a discussion about one of
the critical problems facing Asian Americans: Communication. Many Asians are isolated from their community due to language barriers (some cities report />60% of their Asian residents unable to speak fluent English). Many of you can relate to the fact that immigrant parents encounter difficulties raising 2nd-generation kids in America. And how about the 3rd, 4th or 5th generations that have forgotten their mother tongue?
Here's a situation for you pre-health students: Only 25% of Koreans and 20% of Vietnamese have adequate health care-- lowest among Asians. Yet Koreans and Vietnamese have the highest rates of smoking out of all other Asian groups. And Asians as a whole are the most likely group in the country to have problems communicating with their doctors. This is a perfect
storm brewing in minority health care-- come to tomorrow's SCAPE meeting and learn how to make a difference!
