Volunteer opportunity for prehealth students

I am a pediatrician for Northeast Community Clinics a non profit clinic which serves the underprivileged and I work in two clinics in Wilmington. This is basically a 30 minute drive down the 110 from USC. Our clinic provides prenatal care and services for poor children and we need volunteers to talk to the patients in our waiting area while they are waiting to see the doctor. For more information regarding our clinics you can see our website www.neccmed.org

Volunteer duties might include such things as:

1- Helping children pick out a free book to take home which is age appropriate
2- Encouraging parents to read bedtime stories to their children
3- Encouraging obese children to participate in after school sports activities
4- Providing teenagers with information on scholarships and college counseling options, and encouraging them to consider college.
5- Encouraging adults to go to Adult School to learn English and to learn to read and write
6- Providing information on childhood safety and poison control.
7- Providing information on swine flu immunizations

This is a great job which is very flexible and a lot of fun! This is a good opportunity for health professions students, education students, Spanish students, and sociology students who want a hands-on opportunity to work with the underprivileged. The only absolute requirement is fluency in spanish and a friendly outgoing personality. If evaluations and letters of recommendation are needed we can do this for people who can put in more than 40 hours of time over a period of more than 2 months.

Please feel free to give my email address to any prehealth students or others who may be interested in a volunteer position

Thank you,
