Journal of Young Investigators

My name is Tim Xu, and I am the current Director of Public Relations at the Journal of Young Investigators (JYI). I am writing to make you aware of several exciting educational opportunities in scientific publication, science writing, and mentoring for your students. We deeply appreciate your dedication to the sciences and hope that you will continue to encourage student involvement in research at your institution.

To tell you a bit about our organization, JYI is the premier science journal for undergraduates and is run entirely by talented students from over 50 academic institutions around the world. Featured in Nature, The New York Times, and Science, among others, JYI aims to promote undergraduate science research through monthly publications of scientific manuscripts, features and news articles, and information pertinent to careers in science. Please see the attached Fact Sheet of our organization or visit our website at www.jyi.org for further details about our operations.

Students interested in joining our staff are encouraged to submit applications for available positions. All JYI staff members contribute their time on an unpaid basis, so a strong passion for promoting scientific research is desired. For more information on joining our journal's staff, please go to: http://www.jyi.org/participate.php. We are currently actively seeking candidates for the following positions:

Executive Board (average commitment of 10 hours/week)

  • Director of the Careers Center
  • Director of Human Resources
  • Chief Development Officer

General Staff (average commitment of 3-5 hours/week)

  • Science Journalist
  • Research Associate Editors
  • Career Researcher
  • Human Resources Officer
  • Public Relations Graphics Designers

We are also soliciting submissions for our research departments, which include Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Psychology and Social Sciences. Our editorial staff members carefully review and consider manuscripts for publication on our website. Senior honors theses and summer research papers are especially welcomed.

JYI also maintains a Science Career Center (http://www.jyi.org/SCC/index.php), which includes a database of over 150 summer opportunities sorted by academic focus.

We would be very grateful if you could share these opportunities with your students. If you would prefer not to receive the occasional email from us (3-5 per year), please simply respond to this email with “Unsubscribe” in the subject. If there is another individual at your institution who you think would be interested in JYI, we invite you to forward his or her email address.

Thanks so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Tim Xu
